Return to Sport Update- October 23, 2020

To all our valued Broadmeadows Basketball members, partners and supporters, including our Junior Domestic Clubs, Senior Domestic teams, Junior & Senior Broncos, Program participants, Referees, Coaches and Staff:

President’s Message

On Monday 19 October we conducted our Annual General Meeting via Zoom, somewhat overdue from May but by arrangement with the Corporate Affairs Office due to this being an unusual year because of COVID-19.

Elections to Committee of Management positions were held this year for President, Treasurer, and two ordinary Member positions with old faces Julia Barnett and Mark Crotty (Ordinary Members), Sarah Davidson (Treasurer) and Peter Jackson (President) being returned for the next period. Glen Milner remains as Vice President and Kellie Lewis as Secretary. This year we said goodbye to Trevor Andrew and Shane Gillard, and we thank them for their great contributions to our ongoing development. We have welcomed onto Committee old friends in Warren Taylor and Wayne Bird. Warren recently retired from his senior coaching role at Wallan Basketball and Wayne a former employee and CEO of Basketball Victoria. Both bring a great deal of experience and knowledge and we look forward to working closely with them.

You no doubt have noted the Premier’s recent announcements in relation to the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions and his positive message for the immediate and near future. We see a glimmer of light on the horizon and are hopeful of a return to some form of operations sooner rather than later. To that end no doubt you will have seen Todd’s update message and Rep Ready program. I hope this gives you some cause for excitement and you are engaging and working on your skills and fitness.

We are still in a good, strong and stable condition as an organisation. We are financially sound and have retained all our most excellent staff. We are ready and raring to go at a moment’s notice as soon as we get the green light.

Stay strong, stay the course and stay safe.

Peter Jackson

Return to Basketball Updates

As you will be aware various government restrictions have been relaxed recently, and with more scheduled in the coming weeks we begin to map our return to the court. While there are still several steps before we can play competition and programs as normal, we do have the opportunity to run several programs in the next couple of weeks.

‘Rep Ready’ Outdoor Skills and Fitness Sessions

An Expression of Interest for the Rep Ready and Budding Broncos programs is available here Due to participant limits, those who have completed the EOI will have the first opportunity to register when details are finalised and opened up early next week.

From November 2nd (or potentially earlier depending on announcements this Sunday) Melbourne-Metro Basketball Associations will move to ORANGE-20 status on the Basketball Victoria Return to Sport Guidelines. This allows for outdoor contact training for groups of 20 people. As such we have secured an outdoor venue at Hume College that will operate as a hub for various activities. This will allow us private access to 4 outdoor courts and a synthetic oval and athletics track to run group skill and fitness sessions.

We understand that while all athletes have been in lockdown there have been a large number of obstacles to being able to maintain skills and fitness levels during this time. While many have been attending our Zoom Sessions and Home Workouts (Link Here), this has not been always possible for some and we understand that. Some may fear they have fallen behind, or those who have not played representative basketball before may not feel like they are ready. These programs are designed to allow you the opportunity to get your fitness and skills back up to scratch and lead directly into tryouts once dates are finalised.

To ensure all athletes are given the opportunity to be at their best before the tryout process begins we are offering several ‘Rep Ready’ sessions, led by our 2021 VJBL coaches, working on sharpening your skills and regaining your fitness. This program is open to all current representative and junior domestic players (born 2001-2010) who are interested in attending tryouts for the 2021 Junior Broncos.

The ‘Budding Broncos’ program is for first year Under 12 Boys and Girls. All junior domestic players born in 2011 & 2012 who are interested in the Juniors Broncos program are welcome. Sessions will focus on skills and preparing for the tryout process, if you choose to attend. Again we understand that due to the lack of basketball activity that some may not feel ready. However we encourage anyone interested to attend, regardless of current skill level or experience.

With no date yet announced for indoor activity, we are unable to set a date the start of the next domestic season. While we do anticipate that this could be as early as November 23rd, we understand the need for players and clubs to have some time to prepare. A meeting with club representatives will be held next week to determine a suitable time to begin competition and discuss a timeline for this return.

Outdoor domestic training programs and opportunities for new participants will also be on offer from mid-November. More information will be circulated to junior domestic clubs shortly.

Please also note that ’18 and Under’ indoor contact competition is scheduled to be permitted before senior competition.

As with domestic competition a date has yet to be announced for the upcoming VJBL season. We expect this to begin early next year.

Junior Broncos tryouts will be held closer to this time, allowing all athletes and coaches time to get back to indoor training and sharpen up their skills and fitness. We encourage all those interested in attending tryouts to register for the ‘Rep Ready’ program. These sessions will be run by the Junior Broncos coaches and move directly into tryouts once we are permitted indoors.

BigV leagues are currently scheduled to begin as normal in March 2021. We have confirmed with the league our intentions to enter all 4 of our teams (Senior Men & Women, Youth Men and Women) and work is already underway with the reappointment of coaches and commitment of players.

Programs such as Aussie Hoops, Toddler Hoops, High Performance, Inclusion and Casual Shooting remain suspended until a time our venue reopens and indoor gatherings can take place. This could be as soon as November 23rd.

In addition to the physical skills preparation sessions links, we encourage you to also access the links to our off court support mechanisms, including those related to mental health and well being, nutrition and gambling.
