Senior Broncos Results - Round 13

Senior Women def Casey
Hume City – 72
Casey – 70
Nicole Zammit – 22 points, 9 assists
Bianca Babic – 16 points
Huge win for the Hume City Women with a 2-point game against the Casey Cavaliers.
Casey had lost 6 games in a row prior to this match-up but had a few players back to take it up and make a great contest.
The Broncos pushed through the fight of the first quarter, leading 22-15 and then 39-26 at half time, having to get through Casey’s relentless defence.
The second half went on without BreAnna Brock, unable to continue the game due to injury, which made it tough for the Broncos and Casey made the comeback, cutting the lead to 2 points at three-quarter time setting up an exciting finish.
It was a see-sawing final quarter with 5 lead changes as both teams struggled to gain momentum. Casey hit a 3 pointer to tie with 11 seconds to go as Coach Dee called a time-out to set a final play…
Without BreAnna, Azia Bishop stepped up in the paint as she had isolation in the key for a lay-in with 5 seconds to go and effectively winning the game.
This win now puts the Broncos 2ndon the ladder, with another opportunity for a win as a road trip to last-placed Warrnambool comes along this Saturday.

Senior Men def Casey
Hume City – 125
Casey – 110
Pete Puondak – 32 points, 6 rebounds
Daniel Foster – 13 points, 12 assists
Coming into this one was a massive game – with the winner taking 2ndspot on the Championship Men ladder and a head-to-head result.
A big crowd turned up for this one (300+) as the Broncos put on the scoring pressure early, going up 30-23 at quarter time and lead at the half at 62-49 in a very high scoring start, as a Pete Puondak windmill dunk highlighted the first half.
The Broncos continued their dominance in the third quarter, starting off with a Jamal Shabazz dunk to keep up the momentum, and Pete Puondak scored 10 points in a row with the Broncos leading by a comfortable 22 points.
Casey tried to make a comeback (ended up winning the quarter 31-38) but the Broncos did enough to keep them at bay, taking their 2ndposition on the ladder and the head-to-head, which will become extremely important coming into finals.

Hume City – 81
Camberwell– 68
Marshall Kearing – 27 points, 9 rebounds
Chris Alai – 21 points, 5 rebounds
A good start set up the Broncos for a great win, not letting the Dragons get in front at any stage of the game.
The Broncos had a 5 point edge at the end of the first quarter, and kept that lead until the fourth, where there was a further push on scoring pressure as the final score saw a great 13 point win.
The Broncos were much more efficient in scoring – taking 2 less shots than the Dragons and scoring 52 points in the paint.

Hume City – 90
Frankston – 93
Marshall Kearing – 26 points, 16 rebounds
Mitchell Goodwin – 17 points, 8 rebounds 7 assists
Unfortunately the Youth Men couldn’t back up with another win against Frankston, as they lost by 3 points.
Perhaps running out of legs in the last quarter as the Broncos did have a 4 point lead with a 1 minute to go.
Nevertheless a good weekend for the Youth Men, showing some great plays and confidence to head into Round 14.

A disappointing loss for the Youth Women as for three quarters of the game it was consistently back and forth with several lead changes.
Tied at the end of the third quarter, it looked to be a close finish but Kilsyth stepped up to take a 14 point win.
