The Broadmeadows Basketball Association (BBA) was deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of Life Member Beryl Paterson.

Beryl joined BBA in 1986 running the sports shop and organizing Canteen services as our then fledgling organization was consolidating domestic competitions and entering representative teams at both the junior and senior levels. Along with fellow Life Members (now deceased) Ken and Gwen Holland, Beryl formed a small but effective operations team that ensured the sustainability of BBA programs, including the conduct of highly successful annual junior tournaments and hosting of several international exhibition games.

No job was too small or too menial for Beryl’s involvement as she took on other tasks including venue supervision, at the same time balancing challenging family commitments and her own participation in domestic basketball and netball competitions under the banner of the Glenroy Grannies (who garnered mainstream media attention for the longevity of their commitment to sport).

Beryl’s active association with BBA ceased a few years ago, when she devoted the majority of her time to supporting her husband Bob during a terminal illness. She still, however, maintained contact with BBA people and was a regular attendee at the BBA Annual General Meetings.

BBA extends its sincere condolences to Shane, Shannon, Jainie and the extended family as they mourn this sad loss.

We will remember Beryl fondly for her enormous and energetic contribution to the work of BBA; in tribute to that contribution, our Big V teams will wear black arm bands during their games on the weekend of 11 and 12 May.
