After opening the 2024 Big V season with a couple of big wins, the Hume City Broncos Youth League Men overcame a 15-point half time deficit against the Coburg Giants to come away with an exciting 90-89 victory.

After a fairly even opening term, the Giants kept the Broncos at arm’s length in the second, getting out to a double-digit lead and controlling the tempo of the game. Zach McKenzie (11 pts), Elijah Saifaleupolu (10) and Haydon McIntosh (9) kept the Broncos in the contest.

The third quarter was a fascinating affair. The Broncos started well, whittling the margin down to single digits before the home side broke free again, leading 67-50 at the halfway mark. Then, in four minutes of madness, the Broncos scored 17 straight points to tie the game with a minute to play. Six individual Broncos players scored during the hot streak, which rattled the hosts and completely shifted the momentum of the contest.

A three-pointer from Keegan Radecki gave the Broncos the lead early in the final quarter, but despite their strong early season form it was clear they had a fight on their hands if they wanted to leave with the W. The Giants got back out to an 84-76 lead with under five minutes remaining and the lead nine changed times for the quarter. A crucial basket from Elijah with twelve seconds left put the Broncos up 90-89 but Christian Saviane had the chance to give the Giants the lead with two free throws. He missed both and the Broncos held on for third straight victory and a perfect 3-0 start to the season.
