In a season full of milestones, challenges, and growth, the Hume City Broncos Youth League Men made their debut in the Victorian Youth Championship Men (VYCM) after winning the required games in the qualification series. VYCM is the premier division of youth basketball in Victoria.

The team entered 2025 knowing it would be a year of learning, adaptation, and development, and while the final record of 7 - 15 doesn’t fully reflect the team’s competitiveness, the season delivered far more than wins and losses. It provided a platform to grow, build identity, and gain invaluable experience.

The Broncos burst out of the gates with a 5 - 2 start, notching standout wins over strong sides like Eltham and Nunawading, playing with a sharp, fast paced style of basketball. At their best, the team showed a level of execution and defensive commitment that justified their place among the state's best.

The season wasn’t without its challenges. The squad faced roster instability with players bouncing between Champ Men and Youth League, and the adjustment to the speed, size, and pressure of VYCM competition. Shooting inconsistencies made offensive rhythm difficult at times, and many of the club’s younger players were thrust into major roles sooner than expected.

One of the defining moments came in a spirited, undermanned effort against Nunawading. Despite falling short, the Broncos showed the grit and resilience that became hallmarks of their identity and walked away knowing they could compete with anyone.

Head Coach Simon Gray praised his squad’s resilience and development:

“We were very excited to be playing VYCM and the opportunities it provides for greater understanding of elite level competition.

Although we experienced mixed results, our group showed enough throughout the season to demonstrate that this is the level we belong in.”

Several players emerged as key contributors. Dylan Wijayanayake was fearless and consistent throughout the season, highlighted by a 30-point performance against Wyndham in which he completely filled the stat sheet earning a Big V team of the week selection.

George Milburn, Robbie Coman, and Zach McKenzie also each earned Big V Team of the Week honors, something of a highlight for all three players.

Defensively, the group made great strides throughout the season. Their team-first mindset and improved discipline showed they could withstand pressure and compete with structure.

The season also marked a farewell to a core group of players who aged out of youth competition: Haydon McIntosh, Derhyse Matautia, Zach McKenzie, Sam O’Toole, and Robbie Coman. All five have been critical to the team’s progress and are now expected to feature in the Champ Men’s program, with several already making appearances. Notably, Haydon and Sam progressed all the way from grassroots to the senior ranks. From a development standpoint it is awesome to see.

This season would not have been possible without the tireless work behind the scenes. A huge thank you goes to Head Coach Simon Gray, whose leadership guided the team through a historic year. Appreciation also goes to assistant coaches Stevie Paslawskyj and Ethan Fitzpatrick for their commitment to player growth and preparation each week. And finally, a special shoutout to Team Manager Paul O’Toole, whose organisation and care helped keep everything running smoothly across a demanding season.

While the record may show 7 -15, the real result was a deeper understanding of the VYC level, stronger bonds within the group, and a roadmap for what’s required to compete long-term. With a talented young core returning and the right experience now under their belts, the future of the Youth League program looks bright.
